Giant Center

Project Location:
Derry Township, Dauphin County, PA

Project Description:
Traffic impact studies and traffic signal designs
10,500 fixed seat arena

Engineering Activities:
Grove Miller Engineering, Inc. completed a traffic impact study and traffic signal designs for the Giant Center in Derry Township. The Giant Center hosts activities such as Hershey Bears hockey games, concerts, ice skating shows, PIAA state championship games and numerous other events/shows. In conjunction with the Giant Center project, Hersheypark developed a final master plan for the overall complex that modified entering and exiting traffic patterns and parking layouts of the complex. Traffic engineering activities included collecting traffic data, documenting trip generation potential for arena events, distributing and diverting site generated trips, developing future design year traffic projections, analyzing future design year traffic demands, evaluating capacity of the perimeter road and tolling stations, recommending roadway and traffic control improvements, presenting study report results and recommendations to municipal and state officials, analyzing and coordinating the operations of Hersheypark Drive traffic signals and Hersheypark tolling stations, preparing temporary, preliminary (permit) and final (construction) traffic signal plans, and providing construction consultation. Nine (9) intersections within the study area were analyzed in conjunction with the project. Traffic signal designs were completed for two (2) study intersections.
